Okhaldhunga and Tansen Hospitals
The United Mission to Nepal, the Christian organization that originally founded Patan Hospital, still operates two rural hospitals in Nepal: Okhaldhunga and Tansen.
Tansen is a large, 200-bed referral center with 400 staff members, serving a catchment area of over 1 million people. It sees more than 100,000 patients per year and provides a wide variety of specialty services.
Okhaldhunga Hospital, pictured above, is smaller, with 50 beds and about 35,000 patients annually. It offers primary care services, community-based rehabilitation, internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, orthopedics, and has a school of nursing.
Both hospitals are also important training centers for Nepali health professionals, giving them much-needed exposure to rural medicine. Former FOPH board member Dr. Rebecca Mashburn, who passed away in 2023, worked at Okhaldhunga Hospital for several years.
Given the poverty of the populations these hospitals serve, they are always in need of outside financial assistance to maintain operations and continue treating patients who cannot pay. Tax-deductible donations to either of these hospitals can be given through FOPH, with 100% of the donation sent on to the United Mission to Nepal.
